Collage is a technique of art production, primarily used in the visual arts, where the artwork is made from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole. A collage may sometimes include newspaper clippings, ribbons, bits of colored or handmade papers, portions of other artwork or texts, photographs and other found objects, glued to a piece of paper or canvas. The origins of collage can be traced back hundreds of years, but the technique made a dramatic reappearance in the early 20th century as an art form of its own.

The history of collage is closely linked to the history of modern art, since it emerged as a key artistic technique in the early 20th century. Collage was first used as an artistic technique by the French artist Georges Braque in the early 1900s. Braque used bits of paper and other materials to create abstract compositions. This technique was later adopted by other artists such as Pablo Picasso, who used it to create his famous work, Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907).
The term “collage” was first coined by the artist and critic Jean Cocteau in 1917. Cocteau used the term to describe the work of Picasso and Braque, and it soon became a popular way to describe the new art form that was emerging. In the 1920s, collage became a central technique used by the Dada artists. They used found objects and images to create their art, which often commented on the absurdity of war and the bourgeois values of the time.
Today, collage is still widely used by artists, and the medium has continued to evolve. Contemporary artists often use digital technology to create their collages, and the medium has also been appropriated by graphic designers, illustrators, and other creatives. Collage remains a popular and versatile art form that continues to be reinvented by each new generation of artists.

If you are using paper as your base, you will want to start by tearing or cutting it into different shapes. You can then arrange these pieces however you like before gluing them down. If you are using a canvas, you can start by painting a background color or applying a base layer of paper. Then you can begin adding your different elements on top.
Once you have your collage materials assembled, you can begin glueing them down. You can use a variety of adhesives, such as glue sticks, rubber cement, or even tape.

To create a collage of vintage images, start by collecting a variety of old photos, postcards, and other images. Once you have a good selection, begin arranging them on a piece of poster board or another flat surface. Experiment with different layouts until you find one that you like. Once you're happy with the arrangement, glue or tape the images in place.
If you want to add a bit of color to your collage, consider using some washi tape or other decorative paper to border the images. You can also add text or other embellishments to personalize your collage.
